There's something very U2 in the soaring vocals of 50 Mission Crush, but that's where the similarities end. Bounding pop riffs abound, their shimmering finish dulled by a grimy coating of distortion. Sure, these angst-ridden, pseudo-existential lyrics, "We don't wanna die alone in this world / In this world alone we will die," may be tired Gen-X trademarks, but in this beaming pop structure, they lose any semblance of pretense, and somehow narrowly escape seeming contrived.
