Irvine helped revive Celtic folk in Ireland, first forming the irreverent Sweeney's Men and then going on to found Planxty. Irvine's interested in the Greek bouzouki cemented into a love for Balkan folk after a trip to the Balkans in the late 1960s. Before he became a musician, Irvine was actually something of a child star who acted in several films and stage productions Irvine was in a duo with Paul Brady (who'd replaced Christy Moore in Planxty) after Planxty broke up. He also played, briefly, in De Dannan.
