De Dannan formed in 1974, just as several wonderful neo-traditional Celtic groups were springing up across Ireland. The group originated in Spiddal, Co. Galway, a Gaelic-speaking part of western Ireland. De Dannan are named for Tuatha De Dannan, which is Gaelic for the Tribe of the Goddess Dana. The Tuatha De Dannan were mythical rulers of Ireland for hundreds of years, who were driven underground. The Tuatha De Dannan supposedly reemerged in Irish life as fairies and elves, the famed "little people" of folklore.
