Best known for his work with John Coltrane, Elvin Jones was one of the leading hard-bop jazz drummers. Before he was 20 years old, he had sat in and recorded with people like Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins. Jones joined Coltrane's band in 1960 and left the group after Coltrane hired a second drummer (Rashied Ali) in 1965. During his tenure with Coltrane, he also formed his own band, which released the excellent "Illumination" in 1963. Throughout the 1970s and '80s, Jones became a noted sideman and leader. He formed the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine in the '90s.
