An avant-garde band led by John S. Hall, poet and singer, King Missile first formed in 1986 and made its first release, "Fluting on the Hump" on Shimmy Disc the following year. This disc was said to define the group's style, spoken word lyrics laid over a musical mix of cacophony and melody. 1990's "Mystical Shit", featuring the timeless classic "Jesus Was Way Cool", earned the group its cult status. As alternative music became cool in the early 90's, King Missile rose up from the underground to score the 1993 radio hit "Detachable Penis". By 1998, the group was known as King Missile III.
