Right after leaving the Buzzcocks, Howard Devoto formed Magazine and released Real Life in 1978. Thusly, post-punk was given a voice. The songs have a bit of punk's snarl, but their drama comes through abstract rhythms and gurgling synthesizers. Still, the album never forgets to rock, and "Shot By Both Sides" is one of the best post-punk tracks ever.
