This classic mariachi group, founded by Gaspar Vargas, celebrated its hundredth birthday in 1997.
Gaspar's son Silvestre took over leadership of the band in the 1930s.
Silvestre turned the band into a lean, mean, fighting mariachi machine. They began winning competitions!
Controversy erupted in 1913 when Gaspar Vargas tried to introduce a trumpet into the group.
