Le DJ et producteur Pete Rock et le rappeur C.L. Smooth ont commencé à faire équipe en 1991 pour un premier album intitulé “All Souled Out”. Le duo a ensuite enchaîné sur “Mecca and the Soul Brother” en 1992 et “The Main Ingredient” en 1994, avant de se séparer. “Mecca and the Soul Brother” est devenu un classique, comprenant les tubes “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y)” et “Straighten It Out”. Les deux artistes se sont lancés dans des carrières solo. Pete Rock a sorti “Soul Survivor I” et “Lost and Found”, puis “Soul Survivor II” (1994), auquel son ancien partenaire C.L. Smooth a participé.
