A true renaissance man, this jazz pianist was also a crack songwriter, novelist, social critic, and cutting-edge comedian. Steve Allen was the first host of the "Tonight Show," though his wild style of comedy was closer to David Letterman's. Quite a number of Allen's tunes became standards, the biggest being "Impossible." Allen wrote more than fifty books, ranging from novels and autobiographies to philisophical tomes. Comic actors Don Knotts and Tom Poston received their big breaks as cast members on "The Steve Allen Show."
