Flashback: The Cure Get “Lost In Translation”

The hair alone makes this a post-worthy clip, but the real all-star in this interview from the Cure’s The Top-era trip to Japan is the interviewer herself. With Robert Smith and Lol Tolhurst there to talk about their new single “The Caterpillar,” the host’s English skills are questioned when she tells the band, “If I have to mention one thing I can’t really stand, it’s ‘Caterpillar.’ ”

She goes on to tell Smith that “The Caterpillar” is weird, bemoans of the lyrics to “Bananafishbones” (”Wow! Talk about depressing!”) and asks “Is it really that bad living in London?” She does, however, like the name of the band’s 1983 compilation Japanese Whispers because “Japanese people do whisper, don’t they?” Added bonus — besides the fact that the interview seems to take place in what looks like an abandoned apartment with white sheets covering all the furniture — is the live performance of Faith’s “Primary” that follows the interview.
