One of the most influential and promising reggae acts out of Jamaica, Toots and the Maytals enjoyed decades of success. Critic Lester Bangs considered Toots and the Maytals more important and more talented than Bob Marley. Maytals songs have been covered by artists as such as the Clash ("Pressure Drop") and the Specials ("Monkey Man"). During their height of their popularity in 1966, frontman Frederick "Toots" Hibbert was jailed for marijuana. Toots Hibbert's friends call him "Nyah," which means "man of god."
