Founder Marie Daulne was born in Zaire, the daughter of a Zairean mother and a Belgian father. She grew up in Belgium.
Belgium-raised Marie Daulne returned to Africa to study Pygmy polyphonic vocal techniques, starting Zap Mama upon her return.
