Toots & The Maytals

Musique > Toots & The Maytals
Toots & The Maytals were the first band to ever use the word "reggae" in their song "Do the Reggay". Frederick "Toots" Hibbert formed the band, along with Nathaniel Mathias and Releigh Gordon, in Kingstown, Jamaica in the early 60's. The band recorded their first album, "Hallelujah", with legend Coxsone Dodd. They soon left Dodd and his Studio One, and only after that they became stars. Hibbert was arrested in 1966 for marijuana possession. He turned this experience into one of band biggest hits when he got out of prison, "54-46 That's My Number".
