Jennifer Hudson is best known as an actress and for her role as Effie White in the film version of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls. Jennifer first came to prominence on American Idol in 2004 where she finished seventh overall. In November 2006 Hudson signed a deal with Arista Records but it would take another two years before her debut self-titled album Jennifer Hudson would materialise featuring contributions from Timbaland, Missy Elliott and Robin Thicke.
She has released two singles so far - Spotlight, written by Ne-Yo, who co-produced along with Stargate; and If This Is Love, with the former doing better on the charts. She had previously recorded songs for the Dreamgirls and Sex In The City Soundtracks and was a major success in her roles as an actress in both movies, winning a clutch of awards including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA and a SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Award.
With her career taking off in such a big way, it was a true tragedy that in October 2008 her mum and brother were murdered in Chicago and days later her young nephew was also found dead.
