PRODIGIOUS PRODIGY


The hottest touring band in America has yet to play a note

After turning down the opening gig on U2's upcoming world tour, will Prodigy headline Lollapalooza, spearhead a new techno tour organized by their agent or set out on their own? One thing is certain: with all of these shows running concurrently this summer, even a genius band called Prodigy can't possibly spread themselves out that thin.

"The band does have offers on the table for several events," confirms spokesperson Jill Spear, "but no decisions have been made at this time." The popular Brit techno/rock outfit were equally beloved in the recording field, finding themselves in the middle of a major bidding war which was finally won by Madonna's Maverick label.

The as-yet-unnamed-techno trek is an eight week extension of the rave-like Organic fest held in California's Snow Valley last June. The two-day gathering in the San Bernardino mountains played host to The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Orbital, The Orb, and Meat Beat Manifesto among others. No artists are confirmed yet for the 1997 adventure, but Gerry Gerrard, the New York agent behind the package, represents Prodigy.

In Lollapalooza land, festival co-founder Perry Farrell is back on the Board of Directors and the event is said to be looking for trendsetters to make dissenters (Farrell being one of them) forget last year's testosterone-packed tour which featured such hard acts as Metallica and Soundgarden. Other name acts being bandied about for this year's incarnation include Tool, Korn and The Foo Fighters.
