Single Minded: Cat Power, Ice Cube, Serge Gainsbourg, Andrew WK

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

Cat Power, Black Session [Live]
There was a time when you wouldn’t exactly be clamoring for recordings of Cat Power shows. Thankfully, those days have passed.

Ice Cube feat. Nas and Scarface, “Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It” [Remix]
The best Ice Cube song in years get even better, courtesy of appearances by Nas and Scarface. It gets better still if you listen to it as a defense of “Are We There Yet?”

Serge Gainsbourg, “Chez Le Ye-Yes” [Minimatic Remix]
French pervert gets a little swankier (did you not know perverts were swanky? It’s, like, a law) via this hyperactive remix. As a bonus, this page also contains Minimatic’s reinvention of “Take on Me,” though we would have liked that one better had he attempted to remix the video.

Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, R.E.M. Medley [Covers]
It’s hard to tell what we love more about this video, the group’s ramshackle run-throughs of R.E.M. chestnuts, or the fact that Malkmus looks and acts like a college algebra professor — the cool one! — throughout.

Andrew WK, “The McLaughlin Groove” [Awesome]
WK writes a skull-collapsing jingle composed entirely of dialogue from The McLaughlin Group. These days, “party” is apparently spelled P-B-S.

BONUS TRACK:
Various Artists, “Root of Evil” [Afropop Mixtape]
We’ve decided that basically any time Voodoo Funk posts another mixtape, we’re going to link to it. We’d like to spend about sixty-two hours with this guy, his record collection, and one of those turntables that creates MP3s from LPs.
