(NEW YORK) - Herbie Hancock is busy this summer with a live tour and an album of Gershwin interpretations. |
The jazz-funk fusionist and his crack band the Headhunters are currently on a 17-day U.S. tour in support of their recent Verve Forecast/Hancock Records set, Return of the Headhunters. Shows include Aug. 11 in Memphis, Aug. 20 in Atlanta, Sept. 11 in San Diego, Sept. 19 in Seattle, and Sept. 23-24 in Boulder, Colo.
The group will be opening for the Dave Matthews Band on all of its August dates.
In related Hancock news, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell and Chick Corea are among the guests on Gershwin's World, Hancock's tribute to the late jazz musician George Gershwin, who would have been 100 years old this fall. The Verve/Hancock Records release touches upon jazz, blues, and classical music in its numbers, which co-opt and rework the harmonies and rhythms of Gershwin's material.
The album is due out Oct. 20.
