What was more crushing? Watching the Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” get turned into a cheesy Ford commercial by the American Idol top eleven, or seeing two of the show’s more interesting hopefuls, Carly Smithson and Amanda Overmyer, become two-thirds of the bottom three (along with Kristy Lee Cook)? The rock & roll nurse was ultimately sent packing for her growly rendition of “Back in the U.S.S.R.” — as we suspected, the multi-colored-hair voting bloc is less powerful than the country contingent.
In other Idol news, Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Neil Diamond were named this season’s celebrity mentors, and Ryan Seacrest announced that the songwriting contest that yielded Jordin Sparks‘ chintzy “This Is My Now” is on again. In addition, comedians Billy Crystal, Robin Williams and Dane Cook were added to the lineup for April 9th’s second annual Idol Gives Back charity show.
