The organ's full sound and wide range of timbres have long made it a popular solo instrument, especially in church settings. Classical pieces for the organ date to the late fifteenth century; throughout its history composers such as Pachelbel, Bach, Byrd, Rheinberger, and Messiaen have written important works for the instrument, many of which continue to be performed today.
